Knitting for Homesteaders 101: Learn the Basics of Knitting!

Have you ever wanted to learn how to knit? If so, you’re not alone my friend. Many homesteaders are learning the age-old craft of knitting as a way to make their own unique and beautiful garments and accessories. I myself used to read Anne of Green Gables, especially the first chapter where it talks about Marilla and Mrs. Rachel Lynd's knitting skills and dream of days spent with two needles and a Skein of wool. But where do you start? Let’s take a look at how to start learning how to knit.

Get Your Supplies Together

The first step in learning to knit is getting your supplies together. You’ll need yarn, needles, scissors, stitch markers, and a tapestry needle. You don’t have to break the bank when it comes to getting your supplies; many thrift stores carry inexpensive knitting supplies such as these. Plus, if you already have some of these items laying around the house (like a pair of scissors), then you can use those too!

Knitting for homesteaders: Learn the Basics

Once you have your supplies ready, it’s time to learn the basics. The most important thing is that you become comfortable with casting on and binding off your stitches—these two steps will help ensure that all of your pieces stay together while they’re being knitted. Additionally, there are a few basic stitches that every knitter should know—the knit stitch and purl stitch will be essential for any project you work on. There are plenty of online tutorials and instructional videos available for free which can teach you these basic techniques, including a few of my favorites embedded in this post! Or, if you'd like to learn along with Anne of Green Gables or Pollyanna you can purchase my annotated editions of these classics-that include knitting tutorials for beginners in them!

Practice Makes Perfect

Now that you know the basics of knitting for homesteaders and beginners alike, it’s time to practice! Start off by working on simple projects such as scarves or dishcloths; these will give you enough room to practice without getting overwhelmed with complicated patterns or techniques. Once you feel comfortable with those projects, try something more difficult like hats or mittens! As always, practice makes perfect when it comes to knitting—the more projects that you complete, the easier it gets!

And that's the stitch!

Learning how to knit can be an incredibly rewarding experience—not only do you get satisfaction from creating something beautiful with your own two hands but also end up with an item that is both practical and unique! To get started learning this age-old craft, simply gather up your supplies (or buy some secondhand!), learn the basics like casting on and binding off stitches, and practice until your skills improve. With patience and dedication, soon enough you’ll be able create amazing garments and accessories for yourself or loved ones in no time at all! So grab those needles and let’s get started!
