How to Make Portable Soup (Survival Soup) Like the Swiss Family Robinson

Today I'm sharing a few awesome tutorials that'll show you how to make portable soup of your own, to include in your emergency storage!

My survival and homesteading obsessed eyes definitely perked up the moment I read about portable soup for the first time. I was reading the Swiss Family Robinson, and I just knew it was a project/skill that I had to give a try! I did some digging and found an authentic recipe for Portable Soup from 1753, and included it in our edition of The Swiss Family Robinson & the Great Shipwreck. If you haven't already you can click here to get a discount code, free sample chapters, and read the syllabus detailing everything the books teach. Until then though, I did some MORE digging and found some awesome video tutorials that will show you exactly how to make portable soup of your own, to include in your emergency storage! I'm always on the lookout for activities to go with the books we are reading as a family, especially activities that will teach life skills and this!

1. Easiest Way to Make Portable Soup | Townsends

I just adore a Townsends video, it is one of my favorite Youtube channels. The Swiss Family Robinson was published in 1812, making this a fairly accurate representation of how it would have been made in the author's time period! There is also a great trouble-shooting/FAQ video also by Townsends that I linked to at the end of the post!

2. How to Make Pocket Soup/Homemade Bouillon | PREPSTEADERS

The idea of portable soup seemed so mind blowing, until I realized that it is basically homemade bouillon. BUT that doesn't make it any less cool right? Store bought Bouillon is often FULL of msg and other preservatives and chemicals that might not fit our health goals as a family. All the same, as a family that values old fashioned skills this is definitely one we're excited to add to our arsenal! The Prepsteaders Youtube channel also has some great Pemmican and Hardtack recipes/tutorials!

3. How to Make 18th Century Portable Soup | WolfPack Survival

While the previous two videos were hard acts to follow, I also liked this video from WolfPack Survival. It had some wonderful tips and tricks for avoiding burning the soup, as well as how to tell if it is going to gel up or not. Also, in this video he used a dehydrator, so for those who have one he has some tips for that as well.
