How to Make a Yoga Mat out of Grocery Bags

Today I'm showing you how I made a multi-purpose mat for my van conversion!

It was one of the last (I hope) of 90 degree days before fall weather sets into the Nevada desert. I sat perched on a fallen tree, smooth plarn and a crochet hook in my hands. IT brought to mind the first time I ever made or crocheted with plastic grocery bags! (Plarn) I was 12 years old and it was my first year of girls camp. My assignment that year was to come up with a recycling program for the entire camp for the days we'd be in the mountains. I decided to create a raffle system! The girls would write their names on their used plastic water bottles and deposit them in my recycle bins.

Then at the end of camp I would draw one from each bin, and that person would get a prize! I wanted to prizes to be sustainable and upcycled as well! So I crocheted a hat, a purse, and a water bottle holder out of plarn, and created a set of tin can rollers. I decided to name the brand Groucci with Oscar the Grouch as our mascot and a logo that looked similar to the Gucci logo! ;P It was a fun project, and was the reason why when I needed a multi-purpose mat for my van conversion (read more about that here and here) I knew plarn would be the perfect material

This was a super simple project consisting of mainly chain stitches and single crochet stitches! The only tricky part is just making sure it's long enough, and that you don't miss-or add-stitches! Below I included a video on how to make plarn, this follows the same method I use! I also included a video that uses the same pattern I did for this project!

How to Make Plarn: Making Plarn From Plastic Bags - The Easy Way | Halliday Nelson

I showed you a while ago how to upcycle plastic grocery bags into a usable knitting/crocheting material known as plarn. This is another way to do it that can be easier because you don't have to be so careful with the amount of tension you use. It also has a much cleaner finished look than the knots, although less of the bag is used (unless you find a way to re-purpose those scraps!)
